Shortly after midnight on Aug. 24, a driverless shuttle operated by General Motors ’ Cruise stopped in the middle of a street in downtown Austin, Texas. Then it veered off the road, jumped the curb and hit the side of a building, according to video footage and police reports. By the time officers showed up, Cruise employees had covered the vehicle with a tarp and were trying to dislodge it—a task complicated by the lack of driver’s seat or steering wheel.

President Biden celebrated new labor contracts between the United Auto Workers union and the three major car companies on Nov. 9 while visiting an auto plant in Belvidere, Ill. Photo: Olivier Douliery/AFP/Getty ImagesUnited Auto Workers employees at Chrysler-parent Stellantis have voted overwhelmingly to approve a new labor contract, bringing the tense round of negotiations between the union and Detroit’s carmakers one step closer to completion. The deal was supported by about 68% of Stellantis workers who voted so far, with only a handful of small facilities having yet to report, according to preliminary results published online Friday by the UAW. Votes from those remaining local chapters wouldn’t be enough to overcome the current margin, according to the union’s tally.

General Motors’ self-driving car unit Cruise has paused its U.S. operations after California regulators called its vehicles unsafe. WSJ reporter Ryan Felton explains what this decision means for the future of autonomous vehicles and rivals like Google’s self-driving unit Waymo. Photo: Elijah Nouvelage/ReutersGeneral Motors ’ Cruise is suspending an internal program that allows employees to cash out shares in the driverless-car company, citing the need to revalue the business after a pedestrian accident led it to halt robotaxi services last month. Cruise notified employees of the decision Thursday in an email from Chief Executive Kyle Vogt , which was viewed by The Wall Street Journal. The autonomous-driving startup, majority owned by GM, told employees that the regular quarterly offer to sell shares would be canceled as it re-evaluates the program.

General Motors has invested heavily in Cruise, its self-driving vehicle unit. Photo: Justin Sullivan/Getty ImagesCruise, the self-driving vehicle unit of General Motors , has issued a voluntary software recall after California regulators suspended the company’s license to operate in the state following an accident that left a woman severely injured. The recall of 950 vehicles will address a software problem in the car’s response to collisions, Cruise said in a report submitted to federal regulators. Depending on the circumstances of an accident, driverless Cruise cars will either pull over out of traffic following a collision or in some cases remain stationary, it said.

The United Auto Workers union said it reached a tentative deal with Stellantis on Saturday, six weeks after workers went on strike. Earlier in the week, Ford also reached a tentative agreement with the UAW. Photos: Emily Elconin/Bloomberg NewsThe decision by the United Auto Workers on Saturday to call a fresh strike at General Motors as talks appeared to be nearing a conclusion was the latest in a set of unexpected moves by the union, which has used misdirection and maximized publicity to keep companies off balance. The surprise walkout at a factory in Tennessee followed several days of intensifying contract negotiations between GM and union leaders, including meetings involving GM Chief Executive Mary Barra and UAW President Shawn Fain. The escalation of the strike came as the UAW confirmed that it reached a tentative agreement with Chrysler-parent Stellantis on a new labor contract.

Cruise has faced problems in one of its biggest markets, San Francisco, as its cars stalled and were involved in incidents. Photo: Poppy Lynch for The Wall Street JournalThe California Department of Motor Vehicles suspended Cruise’s autonomous-driving permit Tuesday, effectively halting its robot-taxi service in San Francisco. The DMV said that Cruise’s vehicles aren’t safe for public operation and the company has misrepresented information related to the safety of the technology of the vehicles. Cruise is majority-controlled by General Motors, which has invested deeply in the division and is looking to introduce a fully autonomous shuttle, called the Origin, that doesn’t have a steering wheel or manual controls.

UAW union members have been striking over job security and pay as automakers push forward in developing EV’s, which require fewer workers and cost more in raw materials. So what does that mean for the future of auto workers and the union?
